What are Chemical Peels?
A chemical peel may be used to treat various skin problems and conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, scars, acne and pigmentation amongst others. The procedure involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin to help peel away the top layers. The skin that grows back after the peel is younger looking and smoother in texture. This can be done alone or in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures.
Chemical peels are available in different solutions and are of various depths which target different skin conditions. The deeper the peel, the more dramatic the results, however, the recovery time is longer and could possibly result in more side effects.
The different depths:
Light chemical peels are used to remove the outer layer of skin i.e. the epidermis to treat wrinkles, acne, dehydrated skin, pigmentation and as a prophylaxis for premature aging. These procedures can be carried out every 2-4weeks.
Medium depth peels removed skin cells in the epidermis as well as the upper layer of the dermis (the middle skin layer). They treat the same conditions as the light peels do but are generally only repeated every 6-12months
A deep chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and from portions of the mid to lower layer of the dermis. They are used to treat severe scars, deep wrinkles and precancerous growths.
Side effects can include redness, mild rash, and stinging, burning, changes in skin colour, mild acne, scarring and infection. These side effects pose more of a risk in the deeper peels.
It is important to avoid sun exposure, exercise and the use of a sauna or steam rooms after a peel as well as follow the home care regime to minimize these side effects. It takes a few days (5-7) for new skin to develop in the treated areas and even longer with medium and deep peels. During this time the skin may be inflamed and irritated and may be temporarily lighter or darker than normal.
